Pre-slab drainage - sewer and stormwater laid before the slab is poured - has to match the plans exactly, since a waste in the wrong position under a slab is an expensive correction later. Once the frame and roof are up, rough-in runs water, waste, vent and gas through the structure, which means fixture positions and layouts need to be locked in by that point.

The two things that most often delay plumbing on a site are late fixture selections and unconfirmed layouts. If tapware, toilet suites and appliances are chosen before rough-in, things run smoothly; chosen afterwards, something usually has to be redone. New connections to sewer and water go through the relevant water authority, and stormwater has to discharge to a legal point of discharge set by council - on sloping blocks, battle-axe blocks or properties without street frontage drainage, this is worth investigating at design stage rather than discovering a problem at slab stage.

Extensions and second dwellings bring their own load considerations - existing drainage may need extending or upgrading, and existing water and gas services may not be sized for the extra demand. We assess what's already there rather than assuming it will cope. For owner-builders, we'll work to your program and flag early on exactly which decisions - fixture selection, hot water type, gas load - need to be made before they start causing delays.
