A tap dripping once a second wastes thousands of litres a year, and a toilet with a failed outlet valve can run through far more without making a sound you'd notice. If your water bill has crept up with no change in usage, that's the first place to check - a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, don't flush, and colour in the bowl after 20 minutes means the valve is leaking.

Water pressure that's too high stresses every joint, seal and appliance in the house and shortens the life of your hot water unit, dishwasher and washing machine - a correctly set pressure limiting valve fixes it permanently. Water hammer, the bang when a tap shuts off quickly, is usually excess pressure or unrestrained pipework rather than something needing a full re-pipe.

If you're selling, small visible defects like a dripping tap or running toilet invite price negotiation whether or not that's fair, and they're cheap to fix compared to what they cost you at the table.
