Age is usually the deciding factor between repair and replacement. A storage unit typically lasts 8-12 years and a continuous flow unit 15-20 with servicing. A unit around ten years old needing a major repair is rarely worth it - the next failure is usually the tank itself. Under about eight years old with a failed component, repair is normally the sensible call. We'll price both so you can decide with real numbers.

Gas storage recovers quickly and suits concentrated morning demand. Continuous flow gas heats on demand so it never runs out. Electric storage has the lowest upfront cost but the highest running cost unless it's on solar or off-peak. Heat pump uses roughly a third of the energy of standard electric and pairs well with rooftop solar, though it needs outdoor space with airflow. Solar hot water has the strongest long-term savings but a higher install cost and needs suitable roof orientation.

Sizing matters more than headcount alone - a one-to-two person household is generally looking at 125-160L gas storage or 80-125L electric, three-to-four people at 135-170L gas or 160-250L electric, five-plus at 170L+ gas or 250-315L electric.
